When Bobby Earley and the team at Solid Structures took on this Norfolk, Virginia, waterfront project, they knew they were in for something special. With the Elizabeth River just 100 feet from where the pool would sit, every detail had to be carefully planned and executed to create a backyard oasis that would stand the test of time…and tides. A worthy winner of the September 2025 Pool of the Month.
a vision brought to life
The homeowners came to Solid Structures with a blank slate and big dreams. They wanted more than just a pool; they envisioned a complete outdoor entertainment space where they could host business events and create lasting memories with family and friends. What Jason Pritchard, Project Manager for full backyard makeovers at Solid Structures, and his team delivered exceeded even those lofty expectations.
At the heart of this transformation is The Inspiration 30’ fiberglass pool from Imagine Pools, paired with The Dream Spa, both finished in the stunning Reef Blue color. The choice of color couldn’t be more perfect, as it captures the essence of the nearby river while creating a visual anchor for the entire space.
navigating unique challenges
This wasn’t your typical pool installation, either. Being located on the Elizabeth River watershed meant working within the Chesapeake Bay Protection Act requirements, which govern stormwater and water control for properties near the water. With the water table so close, the team had to get creative with their approach.
Their solution? A raised pool design with a custom retaining wall wrapping around the entire perimeter. This approach created distinct upper and lower levels that add architectural interest while addressing the practical challenges of the location. The team also incorporated extensive landscaping along the watershed as required, turning a regulatory necessity into an aesthetic advantage.

the installation
Getting the pool into place required some serious problem-solving, too. With trees, power lines and limited access, the typical crane installation wasn’t an option. Instead, the team used a telehandler, which is essentially a heavy-duty forklift with a 60-foot boom, to carefully maneuver the pool and spa into position. It’s the kind of precision work that draws neighbors out of their homes and turns an installation into a neighborhood event.
a complete outdoor living experience
Solid Structures didn’t stop at the pool. They created a fully integrated outdoor living space that includes:
pool features:
- Full automation package controllable via smartphone
- Pentair variable speed 2.85 pump for energy efficiency
- 400,000 BTU natural gas heater for year-round enjoyment
- Saltwater chlorination system
- Three CNP deck jets
- LED lighting throughout
- Built-in freeze protection that automatically circulates water when temperatures drop below 38 degrees
hardscaping and structures: The team installed Techo-Bloc HD pavers in Ash Gray Nickel throughout the pool deck and entertaining areas. The sophisticated pattern and neutral color palette complement both the home’s architecture and the natural waterfront setting beautifully. A custom fire pit provides warmth and ambiance for cooler evenings.
But the showstopper? A stunning covered pavilion housing a complete outdoor kitchen with a double sink, bar area, natural gas grill, and ample cabinet storage. And suspended from the pavilion is an inviting hanging bed that’s become the favorite spot for lounging while taking in river views.

the solid structures difference
Founded in 2008, Solid Structures built their reputation on a simple philosophy: do what you say you’re going to do, stand behind the installation and communicate with the client. That approach has made them the go-to contractor for premium outdoor living in Hampton Roads.
“We’re a one-stop shop,” explained Bobby. “We’re with you the entire job, from the initial sales meeting through to completion. We’re holding the customer’s hand the entire way.”
That commitment to communication is more than just talk. Every client gets daily updates through BuilderTrend, including photos of progress made that day. With one of the largest outdoor living staffs in Hampton Roads and nearly everything kept in-house except gas and electrical work, Solid Structures maintains quality control from start to finish.
Their state-of-the-art design center features a half-million-dollar pool display right outside the window, complete with water features, spa, and outdoor kitchen. Clients can watch their kids swim while finalizing designs, and thanks to virtual reality technology, they can “walk around” their future backyard using an Oculus headset before breaking ground.
“It’s a true visualization of the backyard prior to it actually being built,” noted Bobby. “If you don’t like something, this is the time where we can change it.”
the result
From the first design concept to the finished installation, this project showcases what’s possible when vision meets expertise. As a result, these homeowners enjoy a resort-style retreat where they can swim year-round, entertain clients and friends and watch the sun set over the Elizabeth River from the comfort of their hanging bed. It’s a space that elevates everyday living while providing the perfect backdrop for special occasions.
Congratulations to Solid Structures on being named Imagine Pools’ September 2025 Pool of the Month. This installation exemplifies the artistry, technical skill and customer dedication that make a good pool installation truly exceptional.
